Why It Ranks

Prefontaine is the more authentic of the two Pre biopics released in 1997. Leto's performance is fierce and committed. James's documentary background gives the running scenes visceral realism. The tragic ending carries real weight.

The Film

Prefontaine stars Jared Leto as Steve Prefontaine, the charismatic Oregon distance runner whose front-running style and rebellious spirit made him America's most exciting track athlete before his death at 24. Director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) brings documentary realism to the biopic. Leto captures Prefontaine's cocky fire and his principled stand against the amateur athletics system.

Fun Facts

A competing Prefontaine biopic, Without Limits starring Billy Crudup, was released the following year.

Jared Leto ran extensively to prepare and lost significant weight to look like a distance runner.

Director Steve James was chosen because of his documentary background with Hoop Dreams.

Prefontaine's front-running style — refusing to let anyone lead — was considered suicidal by coaches but was his trademark.
