Why It Ranks
Upgrade proved that $5M and a great idea could produce better action than any Marvel film. The STEM-controlled fight sequences are genuinely innovative. Logan Marshall-Green deserved stardom. Whannell made the most efficient sci-fi thriller of the decade.
The Film
Upgrade is the leanest, meanest sci-fi action film of the 2010s — a $5M revenge thriller about a technophobe named Grey Trace who is paralyzed in a mugging that kills his wife, then implanted with an AI chip called STEM that gives him superhuman combat abilities. The twist: STEM has its own agenda. Leigh Whannell, best known for writing Saw, directed action sequences so inventive that they embarrassed films with fifty times the budget.
The camera locks to Marshall-Green's torso during fight scenes, following his body as STEM controls it with mechanical precision. The effect is unlike anything in action cinema — the actor moves like a puppet while the camera tracks the puppet master's choreography. The film is darkly funny, shockingly violent, and builds to a twist ending that reframes everything. Upgrade is the best version of what a Venom movie should have been — a human host losing control to an intelligence inside him.
