Why It Ranks
The Fly is Cronenberg's masterpiece — body horror with a broken heart. Goldblum's transformation is the greatest practical effects achievement in horror. The film works as both a terrifying monster movie and a devastating love story about watching someone you love become unrecognizable.
The Film
The Fly is the greatest body-horror film ever made and the most devastating love story in science fiction. Jeff Goldblum's Seth Brundle is a brilliant, eccentric scientist who accidentally merges his DNA with a housefly during a teleportation experiment. His slow transformation — losing fingernails, secreting digestive acid, his ears falling off — is filmed by David Cronenberg with clinical precision and genuine compassion. This is not exploitation. It is tragedy.
Geena Davis's Veronica watches the man she loves dissolve into something unrecognizable, and their relationship gives the film its unbearable emotional weight. Goldblum's performance is extraordinary — charming, terrified, and ultimately pitiful as Brundlefly loses his humanity one piece at a time. Cronenberg described the film as his version of a terminal illness story, and that metaphor is what elevates it from horror to art. The final scene, where Brundlefly begs Veronica to kill him, is the most heartbreaking moment in horror cinema.
Fun Facts
Goldblum spent up to five hours in the makeup chair for the later transformation stages.
Cronenberg described the film as a metaphor for aging and disease — 'everyone is going through this, just more slowly.'
The telepod design was based on Cronenberg's motorcycle engine — he wanted it to look industrial and real.
Mel Brooks produced the film but kept his name off the marketing so audiences would not expect a comedy.
