Iconic Quote
“(Oddjob tips his deadly hat — silent menace)”
— Oddjob, Goldfinger
What Makes Them Great
Oddjob invented the Bond henchman archetype — the silent, physically imposing servant with a signature weapon. Sakata's smiling menace and the deadly bowler hat are among the most imitated villain elements in spy cinema.
The Villain
Harold Sakata's Oddjob is the original Bond henchman — a silent, smiling Korean manservant whose razor-edged bowler hat can decapitate a statue. Sakata, an Olympic weightlifter, brought genuine physical menace to the role. The hat throw, the gold-painted girl, the electrocution in Fort Knox: Oddjob defined the template for every Bond henchman who followed and did it without saying a word.
