Iconic Quote
“I'm not a queen, or a monster. I'm the Goddess of Death.”
— Hela, Thor: Ragnarok
What Makes Them Great
Hela is the MCU's most glamorous villain — a goddess of death who catches Mjolnir barehanded and shatters it. Blanchett's feline menace and acidic wit dominate every scene. She forced Asgard to reckon with its colonial past and looked fabulous doing it.
The Villain
Cate Blanchett's Hela is the most sheer fun a villain has had in the MCU — the Goddess of Death, Odin's firstborn, and the conquering weapon that Asgard locked away when it decided to rebrand from warlike empire to benevolent protector. Blanchett plays Hela with a feline grace and acidic wit that steals every scene she is in. She catches Mjolnir with one hand and crushes it. She impales entire armies with obsidian blades summoned from nothing. She walks through Asgard like she owns it, because she does.
Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok uses Hela to deconstruct Asgardian mythology. She is the dirty secret, the imperial past that Odin buried beneath golden propaganda. Every mural in Asgard's throne room, she reveals, was painted over — the original murals showed Hela and Odin conquering the Nine Realms together. Her return forces Thor to confront the truth that his civilization was built on violence and colonialism, a reckoning that gives the comedic film unexpected thematic weight.
Blanchett is one of the finest actors of her generation, and she brings that talent to bear on what could have been a standard blockbuster villain. Her Hela is glamorous, contemptuous, bored by opposition, and genuinely menacing when she stops playing. The moment she resurrects an army of the dead and rides Fenris Wolf through Asgard is the most visually spectacular villain entrance in the MCU.
