Medical device engineering meets competitive robotics

The Program

Sponsored by Stryker, one of the world's largest medical device companies, the Techno Ticks benefit from mentors who design surgical robots and medical instruments for a living. That precision-engineering DNA shows in every competition robot Team 2767 builds. Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, they are part of Michigan's incredibly deep FRC ecosystem, and their unique Stryker connection gives them an engineering perspective that no other team can quite replicate.

Medical device engineering demands a level of precision, reliability, and documentation that exceeds most other engineering disciplines. When you are building something that will operate inside a human body, there is zero tolerance for failure. The Techno Ticks absorb this mindset from their Stryker mentors, and it shows in their meticulous approach to robot design, fabrication, and testing. Their robots are not just competitive — they are engineered to a standard that reflects the medical device industry's uncompromising quality standards.

The team's location in Kalamazoo places them in Michigan's competitive FRC landscape, where they compete against some of the best teams in the world on a regular basis. Michigan's district model means that teams face elite competition at every event, not just at the Championship. For the Techno Ticks, this constant challenge has accelerated their development and sharpened their engineering instincts.

The pipeline from Team 2767 to careers in biomedical and mechanical engineering is one of the most direct in FRC. Students who spend their high school years learning precision engineering from Stryker mentors are exceptionally well-prepared for engineering programs at Michigan, Purdue, Northwestern, and other top schools, and many go on to careers in the medical device industry that their FRC experience introduced them to.
