The Waterboy made $185 million — more than Saving Private Ryan's opening weekend — by putting Adam Sandler in a football jersey and letting him scream. Bobby Boucher, the sheltered mama's boy who channels his rage into tackling, is Sandler at his most primal. Kathy Bates as Mama Boucher delivers a legitimately great performance in a film that does not remotely deserve one. The tackling montages are visceral. 'You can do it!' became a national catchphrase. The film is critic-proof and audience-beloved.
