Why They Rank
The most popular player in basketball during the mid-1990s, with a six-year peak that rivaled any forward in history. Hill's all-around brilliance before ankle injuries is one of basketball's greatest what-ifs.
The Career
Grant Hill was the heir apparent to Michael Jordan — a 6'8" all-around forward with elite athleticism, beautiful court vision, a complete scoring game, and a charisma that made him the most popular player in basketball during the mid-1990s. He received more All-Star votes than any player in the NBA in both 1995 and 1996 — as a second-year player — and his first six seasons produced All-NBA numbers that placed him alongside the best players in the league.
Hill's game was graceful and complete. He could score from anywhere, pass like a point guard, rebound at an elite level for a wing, and defend multiple positions. His transition game was devastating — he could grab a rebound, push the ball up the floor, and finish with a creative dunk or no-look pass. From 1995 to 2000, he averaged 21.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 6.3 assists — numbers that compare favorably to LeBron James's early career.
A devastating ankle injury suffered in 2000 robbed Hill of his prime. He played only 47 games over the next four seasons, and the explosive athlete who had been the best all-around player in basketball was reduced to a shadow. His Phoenix renaissance — becoming a solid contributor in his mid-thirties — showed remarkable determination, but the world never got to see what a healthy Grant Hill career would have produced.
