Why They Rank
Two MVPs, a championship won with a 50-point Finals game, and the first player to reach 20,000 points. Pettit's dominance in the early NBA defined the power forward position and set standards that lasted decades.
The Career
Bob Pettit was the NBA's first back-to-back MVP and the first player in league history to score 20,000 career points. His 1958 championship with the St. Louis Hawks — won with a 50-point performance in Game 6 to dethrone the Bill Russell Celtics — remains one of the greatest individual Finals performances ever. It was the only time in 13 years that Russell's Celtics failed to win a title during Russell's tenure.
Pettit was a relentless scorer and rebounder who averaged 26.4 points and 16.2 rebounds for his entire career — numbers that are staggering even by 1950s and 1960s standards. He led the league in scoring twice and was a four-time rebounding champion. His combination of inside scoring, free-throw shooting, and physical toughness made him the dominant power forward of the first two decades of NBA basketball.
What made Pettit remarkable was his work ethic and consistency. He was an 11-time All-Star in an 11-year career — selected every single season he played. He retired at 32 while still at the peak of his powers, choosing to leave on his own terms rather than fade away. His influence on the power forward position laid the groundwork for every great four-man who followed.
