Why It Ranks

Mile 22 exists on this list for Iko Uwais. His fight choreography, even hampered by American editing, is world-class. The handcuffed hospital fight is one of the best martial arts sequences in any Hollywood production of the 2010s.

The Film

Mile 22 is a deeply flawed film redeemed by one element: Iko Uwais. The Raid star plays a police officer who must be escorted 22 miles to an airstrip while every hostile force in the country tries to kill him, and his fight sequences — handcuffed, outnumbered, using improvised weapons — are the best martial arts choreography in any American film of 2018. Peter Berg’s hyper-edited direction often undermines the action (a common complaint), and Wahlberg’s manic performance is divisive. But when Uwais is fighting, the film becomes electric. The hospital hallway brawl where a cuffed Uwais dismantles six armed guards is worth the price of admission alone.

Fun Facts

Iko Uwais choreographed his own fight scenes, bringing The Raid’s intensity to Hollywood.

The rapid editing style was heavily criticized for obscuring Uwais’s martial arts skill.

Mark Wahlberg reportedly performed his own action scenes without a stunt double.

The film was intended to launch a franchise, but the critical reception put sequel plans on hold.
